Camp hammocks are cool if somewhat of a novelty. Portable hammocks for camping are sort of like folding camp chairs, used primarily to make you a bit more comfortable while lounging around your campsite, but far from being a necessity.

As a serious camper myself, when I go into the woods I want to “rough it” as much as possible - very little by way of comfort items! I take the following:

• Tent
• Sleeping bag
• Food
• Clothing

I’ll a small book or two and maybe even my harmonica, but nothing large or bulky.

Given all that, I figured camping hammocks were just not for me, I don’t care how comfortable they are.

Boy was I ever wrong - a camping hammock is actually quite useful. Camping hammocks don’t fit the gear profile for someone who takes the traditional approach to camping: Tents, sleeping bags, and maybe a sleeping pad. You sleep on the ground for crying out loud!

Side note: The girl in this funny video tries to get in a regular yard hammock and ends up on the ground anyway!

But camping hammocks make things easier. They better insulate you from the ground, even if you do use a sleeping pad. What’s more, an all weather camping hammock will be more comfortable then even the thickest sleeping bag because you’re more surrounded by air (the ground takes heat from you more quickly than air).

Since your better insulated from the ground, you’ll stay warmer in a camping hammock with less gear. They are not as thick as comparable sleeping bags, and you don’t even need a tent or rain fly (unless the weather is exceptionally bad). Camping hammocks are available in many models, each designed to hold up in any type of weather condition.

Still, camping hammocks are not the “be all end all” of protection! Your trusty tent and sleeping bag will better serve you in very snowy conditions - you want to be able to keep that snow off you and your other gear.

But for moderate weather, a camp hammock will to the trick, especially if you’re camping with a good number of trees nearby. Camping hammocks will work quite well for the shelter and comfort you need.
